La Plagne is renowned for its extensive intermediate slopes and plentiful off-piste terrain. There is fantastic scenery and stunning views. The runs down to numerous traditional-style villages that make up part of the La Plagne ski area are through trees, very picturesque and useful in snowy weather.
Les Coches is located at an altitude of 1450m and nestles on the wooded slopes, at the western fringe of the La Plagne piste area. It is a small, modern Savoyarde style village with a friendly atmosphere. The centre is virtually traffic free and the network of little streets has a selection of shops, bars, restaurants and one night club. There is some lovely sheltered skiing above the village on fairly easy tree lined runs. The skiing here is generally snow sure being north facing and having extensive snow making. It is possible, for those wishing to stay close to home, to purchase a lift pass just for these 30 km of runs. Families are well served in Les Coches with children's clubs from 6 months to 18 years.
Access from Les Coches, to the rest of the La Plagne area is easy, and the village is in an ideal position to ski or board the whole of the "Paradiski" area, as the impressive, new 200 person cable car (Vanoise Express) that now links Les Arcs and La Plagne is located in Les Coches.
La Plagne itself is a sizeable resort boasting 210 km of pisted runs and 110 lifts. The skiing goes up to a height of 3250 meters on the Bellecote glacier, and the extensive slopes are excellent for beginners and intermediate skiers/snowboarders. There is also wide-ranging terrain for experts particularly if a guide is hired to explore the off piste areas. La Plagne consists of ten separate "villages". Six are purpose built and situated in the main skiing bowl and above the tree line. The remaining four are situated at lower levels and they are generally smaller and more picturesque.
Montchavin is an old farming community and remains relatively unspoiled, it is just a short ski or a gentle downhill stroll from Les Coches. It is located at an altitude of 1250m.
